Terrazzo Quarry

by Bethan Laura Wood
A soft yet monumental seating system, conceived as an inhabitable artificial landscape: a cluster of upholstered elements —usable either as a composed configuration or freely scattered throughout the space— reminiscent of rocks, emerging from an imaginary ground where material and decoration merge. The upholstery, developed by Bethan Laura Wood herself, draws on her residency in a Venetian palazzo, where in 2010 she was struck by the endless variations of the terrazzo floors. From that memory comes an exclusive fabric in which gemstone fragments seem to break free from the aggregate and settle on the surface. Terrazzo Quarry translates surface into volume and pattern into landscape, blurring the line between two and three dimensions, between illusion and structure, and encouraging interaction, climbing, and rest. A “super fake” terrazzo, as described by the designer, quarried from a psychedelic landscape that echoes the radical visions within the Poltronova archive: an imaginary topography that celebrates materiality as experience, play, and narrative.

At EDIT Napoli 2025, Poltronova unveils Terrazzo Quarry — a new project by Bethan Laura Wood, presented within EDIT CULT at the Loggia del Priore of the Certosa di San Martino.

Conceived by creative director Donatello D’Angelo @_d_apostrophe_ , the installation marks a turning point in the company’s history: for the first time since the foundation of the Poltronova Study Centre under the direction of Roberta Meloni, an entirely original design — not drawn from the historical archive — becomes part of the collection.

A world premiere that bridges past and present, reaffirming Poltronova’s role as a living laboratory of radical imagination.
