SUPERONDA + FARFALLA🦋
The Superonda sofa by Archizoom Associati for Poltronova, 1967, meets Farfalla, the printed fabric designed by the same group in 1968: two expressions of Archizoom’s irreverent approach to furniture, decoration and mass culture.
With Farfalla, the traditional floral motif gets a deliberately pop disruption. Butterflies and flowers collide with the visual language of American Pop Art and the graphic experiments associated with artists such as Roy Lichtenstein. Andrea Branzi later recalled that the intention was precisely to cross floral decoration with pop imagery inspired by typographic printing, creating a contrast between two apparently incompatible visual worlds.
Applied to Superonda, that contrast becomes even louder. Designed without a conventional frame, legs or backrest, the sofa itself had already challenged the established typology of upholstered furniture. Farfalla adds another layer: pattern is no longer polite decoration, but part of the provocation.
Superonda is composed of two polyurethane elements cut from a single block and can be arranged in different configurations, while Farfalla is today part of Poltronova’s fabric catalogue, produced in polyamide and elastane with a polyurethane midlayer.
Two Archizoom projects. Two different years.

The butterfly pattern, designed by Archizoom in 1968, was a reinterpretation in an acid, pop key of the floral theme that came from a much more composed tradition, and is now part of Poltronova’s fabric catalogue.

Prato is a hand-tufted wool rug inspired by the Archizoom group’s 1967 Farfalla pattern, blending Art Nouveau floral motifs with Pop Art experimentation. It features bold primary colors, geometric shapes, and decorative elements like checks and stripes, echoing the styles of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

Designed in 1967 by the Florentine Radical group Archizoom, this was the first sofa without a conventional frame. It is composed of two waves made from a polyurethane block cut into two parts with an S—shaped incision, which can be interlocked and stacked to produce different configurations. The lightness and modular design permit a range of various uses: Superonda can be a sofa, a bed or a chaise longue. Like many of the pieces designed by the Archizoom group, it challenges bourgeois conventions, stimulating the creativity and fantasy of the user. The shiny leatherette cover in the basic colors of white, black and red accentuates the pop image.

Centro Studi Poltronova presented a reading corner at 5vie Head Quarter, where it was possible to check out two volumes of the series The Monographs of Poltronova, Superonda: Archizoom Associati and the latest release Mies + Sanremo: Archizoom Associati. Everyone was able to relax browsing books on the iconic Superonda by Archizoom in the Farfalla indoor/outdoor version. A beat of the wings is enough to make the umpteenth version of the chair designed in 1966 to challenge conventions take off.
