Elle Decor: Alchemica

Poltronova was present at Palazzo Bovara for the exhibition ALCHEMICA, curated by Patricia Urquiola. The installation featured a composition of two complete SAFARI sofas (Archizoom Associati), specially upholstered in custom violet eco-fur for the occasion, and the PASSIFLORA table lamps (Superstudio).
For the 2025 Milano Design Week, Elle Decor intertwined its vision with the metaphor of alchemy—an ancient practice exploring the transformation of matter as both a physical process and a symbol of growth and change. The exhibition was structured around the three fundamental stages of the alchemical process—Nigredo, Albedo, and Rubedo—each represented through spaces evoking the most symbolic rooms of the home.

From Superstudio to Sottsass, from Pettena to Hollein — a landscape of icons in constant flux. No longer a home. Not quite a museum. But a tactile fiction that still lingers, long after the fair is wrapped up.

Under the creative direction of Donatello D’Angelo, Poltronova continues this exploration,
transforming the exhibition space into an undomestic landscape—an environment that rejects
the functional order of the home to explore new perceptions of dwelling.
The display unfolds through reflective and fragmented planes, embossed panels that break
up the light, curtains and drapes that create unstable depths. A matter in tension, in
constant mutation. In this scenario, Poltronova’s iconic pieces are not mere displayed objects
but sensitive presences, elements that rewrite the concept of domestic space.

🤍 Rumble is a playful sofa. It is a simple, original form, a womb where everything happens or has already happened, but which still suggests possibilities, other things that can happen there. It is an object that breaks up form as it breaks up function; it acquires meaning when the clean geometry of the initial status quo is upset by equally ungrammatical functions.

⭕️ The Mitzi sofa, designed by Hans Hollein, makes its debut to the general public with its distinctive érable burlwood finish. An object that challenges the dichotomy between function and symbol.

🔻 The Mitzi sofa, part of the rich production of the Austrian master Hans Hollein, highlights a rigorous design while staging of a dialectic between different connotations and symbolisms. Soft and rigid elements are present together in the materials and forms. Upholstered cushions and soft wool cloth come alongside the walnut, both solid and in sheets, of the structure, and the curved line of the backrest coexists with the straight line at the base, masculine and feminine together: a sofa with a woman’s name.

📐 The Mies armchair was born in 1969 from the idea of using a strip of para rubber or India rubber –strong, elastic materials– as a seat. The structure, a triangle in chrome–plated metal, brings out the purity of the silhouette. The headrest and footrest–lamp cushions are in ponyskin. The name emphasizes the similarity of the structure to the projects of Mies van der Rohe, as a tribute to the great master who died that same year.

🔗 The prototype, which is the gift made by Paolo Deganello to Dario Bartolini and Lucia Morozzi for their wedding, was born from the idea of using the typical element of industrial conveyor belts as a seat. It is a strip of natural rubber that is grafted onto the trapezoidal steel frame, fixing itself to two cylindrical sticks. In contrast with the seat, the headrest is in pony leather. The armchair is listed in the catalog by the company along with a luminous footrest with the same steel and pony finishes.

🌟 Our beloved @bethanlaurawood! 🌟

From the Terrazzo Quarry at the Design Museum to the cover of Door Magazine, Bethan keeps inspiring us with her vibrant, playful vision.

— Designed for the Platform exhibition, Terrazzo Quarry is a interactive soft sculpture that show cases the Terrazzo pattern developed for Poltronova.
Giant rocks extrude out from the ground blurring the line between 2D and 3D pattern and form inviting the public to sit lean and explore their soft forms. Bethan decided to create a super fake terrazzo who’s precious stones could have been mined from the psychedelic landscape that many of the icon designs from Poltronova’s catalogue evoke.

Covered in pony-like bovine leather with shaved and dyed hair produced by Conceria Tris on the occasion of Lineapelle Interiors 2025, Joe is a large, comfortable armchair shaped like a giant baseball glove mounted on invisible wheels.
With this 1970 project, the designers, inspired by the poetics of Pop Art, materialized their admiration for the legendary American baseball champion Joe DiMaggio, introducing hyper-realistic figurations belonging to the world of art into the domestic environment. Joe is one of the icons of Italian design: exhibited in various museums dedicated to art and design, it is part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum and the MoMA in New York.

Sanremo is composed of a slender metal trunk topped by “foliage” like that of a stylized palm tree, formed by lanceolate transparent or fluorescent green methacrylate leaves that radiate light.
The prototype of the Sanremo floor lamp was an engagement present from Dario Bartolini to Lucia Morozzi, given to her in the villa in Roccamare designed by Ernesto Nathan Rogers.
The prototype also called for a sound similar to the song of a cricket, eliminated in the production version.
Floor lamp with indirect light Sanremo is a floor lamp more than two meters high with a phytomorphic shape. A square base supports a long stem made with a lacquered steel tube onto which a luminous crown composed of 12 perspex leaves is grafted in the green or transparent versions.

The exhibition tells the remarkable story of how, through the marriage of Italy’s rich craft tradition, technological and industrial advances and a capacity for creativity, experimentation and invention, Italian design became admired throughout the world. Drawn from public and private collections across Australia, the objects in the exhibition include classic chairs, lamps, homeware, etc.

Molto Bello celebrates key proponents in the industry and their enduring contribution to global culture; from the elegant and dynamic early work of architect–designers such as Gio Ponti and Carlo Mollino, through the ingenious and stylish creations of Gae Aulenti, Joe Colombo, and the Castiglioni brothers, to the quirky and provocative Radical Design movement, Memphis Milano, prominent design figures Ettore Sottsass, Nanda Vigo, Gaetano Pesce, and more.

— The Cessato Allarme is an iconic clothes stand designed in 1986 by De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi and manufactured by Poltronova in 1991.

— 🚨 Its name, which translates to “All Clear,” takes inspiration from the alarm sirens mounted on streetlights during war.
Crafted from durable metal and available in vibrant colors, this coat stand perfectly balances functionality with playful pop aesthetics.

In the butterfly and in the world of shiny sky, polka dots, chequered, flowers and stars, the anti—system art of American artists such as Liechtenstein and, more generally, of Pop Art continues to develop. The butterfly pattern, designed by Archizoom in 1968, was a reinterpretation in an acid, pop key of the floral theme that came from a much more composed tradition, and is now part of Poltronova’s fabric catalogue.

Prato is a hand-tufted wool rug inspired by the Archizoom group’s 1967 Farfalla pattern, blending Art Nouveau floral motifs with Pop Art experimentation. It features bold primary colors, geometric shapes, and decorative elements like checks and stripes, echoing the styles of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

— On the plate you can spot a piece of “Cassata Fiorenza”, a classic Florentine dessert: a thin layer of hazelnut fills the wafer, which is then coated in chocolate. One of our favorites! It’s a must at the office 🧏

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Superonda, Roberta Meloni, CEO of Poltronova, collaborated with Archizoom Associati to create new celebrative outfits for this iconic product. Six special versions were designed, each reinterpreting the past of the Archizoom members, in this case, Paolo Deganello.

In 2017, Poltronova launched six limited editions of Superonda, honoring its playful, anti-design nature. These editions were unveiled at the 2018 Milan Triennale during Design Week.

Cielo is one of the three hand-tafted wool rugs inspired by the Farfalla pattern designed by the Archizoom group in 1967 in their quest for an acid contrast between the floral, art nouveau decor and the experimentation that was taking place in Pop Art in those years. Three reinterpretations, in three different forms, of the main parts that made up the original pattern. Cielo is characterized by an explosion of primary colours and simple, geometric shapes spanned by decorative motifs-typical of the productions of artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol-such as polka dots and oblique stripes.

The Mies armchair was born in 1969 from the idea of using a strip of para rubber or India rubber —strong, elastic materials— as a seat. The structure, a triangle in chrome—plated metal, brings out the purity of the silhouette. The headrest and footrest cushions are in ponyskin. The name emphasizes the similarity of the structure to the projects of Mies van der Rohe, as a tribute to the great master who died that same year. With its rigorous geometric design, the Mies armchair sums up the philosophy of Archizoom Associati, leading figures of the Italian Radical movement starting in the second half of the 1960s.

SOFT
Fabrics and upholstery take shape in surprising sculptural elements. In the bedroom space, the Ultrafragola and Vanitas mirrors, the Mies armchair, and the Canton bench mark the perimeter of the room, where geometries merge seamlessly to create a “smooth” effect.

REFLECTIONS
A gallery of light and glass narrates the reflections and illusions of material. Light itself, an intangible material, gives three-dimensionality to surfaces and follows the sinuous line of the Superonda sofa, which invades the gallery’s path with multiple units, creating a “wave effect.”
