UN—Poltronova at MDW 2026
Inside Lella and Massimo Vignelli: A Language of Clarity at @triennalemilano, the work of one of the most influential design duos of the twentieth century comes into focus through a vision that moves across graphic design, product design, and architecture under the principle of “Design is One”.
Within the exhibition, Saratoga plays a central role in tracing the early stages of Lella and Massimo Vignelli’s collaboration with Poltronova.
Designed in 1964, Saratoga translates their idea of design into built form: a rigorous synthesis of geometry, function, and formal clarity, articulated through essential volumes and an explicitly architectural structure.
Its presence in the exhibition extends beyond the object itself. It also points to the broader contribution of the Vignellis to the identity of the brand, which in those same years included the graphic design of Poltronova’s catalogues: a systemic, coherent, and radical body of work that helped define one of the earliest integrated expressions of design and communication within Italian design culture.

Under the creative direction of Donatello D’Angelo, Poltronova continues this exploration,
transforming the exhibition space into an undomestic landscape—an environment that rejects
the functional order of the home to explore new perceptions of dwelling.
The display unfolds through reflective and fragmented planes, embossed panels that break
up the light, curtains and drapes that create unstable depths. A matter in tension, in
constant mutation. In this scenario, Poltronova’s iconic pieces are not mere displayed objects
but sensitive presences, elements that rewrite the concept of domestic space.

The series is composed of an armchair and sofas with two, three or four seats. The rigid structure, made by assembling four parts of equal thickness, with rounded edges, contains slightly protruding seat cushions. The desired purity of the silhouette is accentuated by the precious finishes: glossy polyester lacquer for the chassis, similar to that of a pianoforte, and the fine leather of the soft cushions, resembling the upholstery in luxury automobiles. The essential form combined with the precision of the design and the refinement of the finishes and details make this project by Lella and Massimo Vignelli timeless, over and above passing fashions, which they always avoided.
