Aurora Boreale

These rings were made in the mid-Sixties with scraps of plexiglas, a material used in those days for the signs on shops. An artisan on Via del Corso in Florence made them to my specifications, using the techniques and tools of openwork: hacksaws, drills, emery paper, glue. I gave them the name Aurora Boreale, thinking of the shifting luminous stripes of different colors produced by the phenomenon of solar particles in contact with the earth’s ionosphere in the magnetic fields of the planet. They are optical micro-phenomena, colorful and shimmering, to wear on the fingers of pale, pink, dark, yellow, smooth or wrinkly hands. (Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, 2016)
